Titanic was build by Harland & Wolff ships builders in Northern Ireland and owned by William Pirrie
Bruce Ismay managing director of the White Star Line. Mr Ismay wanted three grand ships to be built to compete with Cunard, even though Cunards ships were faster but the Olympic class ships would be bigger and far more luxurious.
The ships would be called Olympic & Titanic and Britannic. The Olympic class ships were designed to have 3 funnels but Bruce Ismay wanted to match an beat the competition.
So the great ships were built with four funnels.
Titanic keel was laid on the 31st march 1909 known as yard number 401 with a tonnage of 46.000 and a length of 882ft long. Titanic had the best technology for the time, having triple screw propeller with one of them being a low pressure turbine with a output of 16,000hp
With a cruising speed of 22 knots. Titanic capacity was 2,435 and a crew of 892 with only a total of 20 lifeboats.
Titanic set sail from Southampton on the April 10th 1912 under command of Edward John Smith, to New York via Queens town, Cherbourg.
Her passenger crew list with famous names such as John Astor & Benjamin Guggenheim and the unsinkable Molly Brown.
The third class passengers were treated very well table clothes , waiter service and even menu's which could be used for post cards. White Star was hoping they would tell their friends & family how well they were treated.
No expensive was sparred when it came to fitting out the Titanic the best craftsman’s was used. The ship had a heated swimming pool, gym ,Turkish bath and telephones in some rooms.
The 1st class smoking room was elegant Georgian style room for men keeping in with social conversion for the time.
The room was decorated with dark mahogany, with inlay of mother of pear and beautiful stained glass window. The floor was blue & red tiles with a beautiful roaring fire and up about was a painting of Plymouth harbour painted by Norman Wilkinson.
The Titanic had a A’la carte restaurant which was very luxurious and exclusively to the first class passengers, the first class could enjoy lavish meals at additional cost, the restaurant was not managed by the White Star line but by Mr Gatti and his staff was not part of the regular crew.
The Running of the ship
The Titanic had eight officers included the millionaires captain which he was known as.
Commander Smith with years of experience Smith was the most experienced captain , he went down with the ship.
There were 332 stewards on the Titanic I always think about the stewards as I was a steward at HMS Cambridge, Plymouth sadly its no longer there. The stewards on RMS Titanic were poorly paid so they relied upon tips to boost their wages up, most had several rooms to deal with .
Fist class stewards not only cleaned rooms and make beds they had to serve food in rooms and even dress first class passengers. As well as Stewards there was 62 galley & kitchen staff sadly only 13 survived. The chefs on the Titanic was produce some of the best meals fit for royalty
The engineers were responsible for the upkeep of the engines and generators running the ship all 25 engineers ,10 electricians and boilermakers most of them lost their lives.
I feel myself a heartfelt to the engineering crew as these brave lads kept the lights from going out whilst the great ship was sinking and not a thought for their own lives.
Even down to the fireman feeding Titanic’s massive boilers with coal working in back breaking condition with a heat of 120f.
Also on board Thomas Andrew the ships designers and 8 workers from Harland & Wolff known as the guarantee group, the best in their field. if needed to be call upon if the ships had any problems.
The Titanic had five postal clerks supervised all incoming and outgoing mail, even when the post room was flooding the postal staff was trying to save the bags of post these were the first to loose their life's.
Sinking
The Titanic wireless operator Jack Phillips was receiving ice warning for most of Sunday 14th.
On the evening of the 14th April was a very cold night . The weather was clear and the sea was very calm.
High up in Titanic crow nest was Fred fleet noticed a very large object in the distance right in the path of her bow. Fred fleets sounded the ships bell and picked up the telephone the duty officer picked it up and asked “WHAT DO YOU SEE “ ice berg right ahead fleet replied .
The duty officer ordered the ships wheels to be turned hard to port and a command was given to full astern, via the telemotor a brass device situated on the bridge contacted to the engine room, and then hard to starboard command was given to avoid the stern hitting
but she hit on the starboard side just below the waterline ,ice fell on the deck as she scarped by. Crew members in the bowls of the ship came face to face with the North Atlantic Ocean.
Captain Smith called for the ships designer Thomas Andrews to inspects the damage, Andrews reported that the mail room was flooding so was forward holes and two boiler room.
The watertight compartments were closed but Titanic was designed to float with any two compartments or the first four if you believe the many books out there, but Titanic was damaged in the first five.
As the bow would get lower in the water the compartments would flood and spill into the next. Andrews told Captain Smith the Titanic had an hour may be two to live
Smith went down to the Marconi radio room ordered Harold Bride radio operator to send for help. Bride suggest using the new distress call SOS Titanic was one of the first ships to use this. Officers noticed in the distance was ships lights history tell us it was the passenger ship Californian or was it?.
Captain Smith ordered the rockets to be fired and hopefully the Californian would see them and come to the rescue but the steamship did not.
Harold Bride informed Captain Smith of a rescue by the ship Carpathia but she was fifty eight miles away and they would take four hours to get to Titanic, the Carpathia was a far smaller ship than the Titanic.
All passengers were ordered to put their life belts on and head up to the boats ,well first class that is but the passengers did not really rush why they would on unsinkable ship.
Officers were asking for woman & children first some lifeboats were designed to carry sixty four men but some were filled with as little as 26.
Below in 3rd class the situation was a little more real most of the 3rd class were still waiting to be lead up to the boat deck. Some of the third class had to break down some gates separating class to have a chance to live through this nightmare.
By early hours on the 15th April Titanic's bow could no longer be seen it was well under the surface.
As the ship was sinking into the sea, most of the passengers was heading towards the stern which is now out of the water showing her huge propellers .
I always ask myself what would you do in that situation stay on a sinking ship or jump into the freezing north Atlantic. The ships band was playing whilst all this was happening, these brave men played on to keep the passengers from panicking sadly they never survived.
Sadly Titanic broke in two from the pressure of the bow so far underwater .
The Titanic sank at 2.20am 15th April 1912 for hundreds of people in the freezing water, waiting for the lifeboats to come back for them but only one ever did but it was too late.
The Titanic lays in 2.5 miles of water and being eaten away by microscopic bacteria which is eating all the iron from the ship. As the bacteria is eating the ship it is leaving icicles know as rusticles . Maybe she might last 20 years or 200 years but one thing her story will live on well after she has rusted away.
